How to spot scams and fraud on the job in Australia
A growing number of professional hairdressers and hairdressing services are getting in the act of scamming people who work for them.
One of those services, the Australian Haircare Association, says its own recruitment practices are being used to recruit people with questionable credentials, and is currently seeking advice on how to combat the problem.
AHA head of recruitment, Mark Jones, said he believes that professional hairstylists and hairliners were part of a broader scam involving the online grooming industry.
“We’ve had a number of people come forward with stories of people who have come forward and said they’ve had issues with professional hairlines and they’ve said that the professional haires and hairstyles are fraudulent and they should be banned,” Mr Jones said.
Mr Jones also said that it was a common scam that some people were asked to pay for work, with the job often requiring a professional hair stylist. “
They’re a part of the industry, they have a number in the industry and they’re selling these services to people.”

“There’s a lot of fraud going on, there’s a number out there, people are just getting in it and they just come along and say, ‘I can do that for you’,” he said.
Mr Jones urged anyone who believed they might have been recruited by someone with questionable background or credentials to contact their local ABC local.
“If you’ve had problems with your job, contact your local ABC Local and tell them what’s going on and tell your employer about it,” he said, adding that the ABC should always check with employers about any concerns.
MrJones said the Australian hairdryers and hair salon industry had been hit hard by the rise of the online industry.
He said the industry was working hard to fight the scourge of online grooming, and he believed that the recent closure of the Sydney hairdresses business was an important step in that effort.
He advised hairdylists to take a “hard look at what their job is about”.
“You should look at where you’re at in your career and you need to be looking at your career at all times and if you’re not you’re going to be taking it too far,” MrJones added.
AHA says its website is still up and running, and the ABC can contact Mr Jones to ask more about his organisation’s recruitment practices. “
That’s what people need to look at in terms of what their career is about, what are the things they need to work on and they need professional hair stylists to help them.”
